Jefferson Parish Council Honors Bilingual Parent Liaison Areli Hernandez

Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng presented Areli Hernandez with a proclamation for her decades of service to children and families. Hernandez has been the JP Schools West Bank ELL/ESL Bilingual Parent Liaison for 19 of her 25 years with the system. 

"We have people in the community who go above and beyond and their work touches so many people, and I think Mrs. Hernandez is one of those people," said President Lee Sheng.

Hernandez is a native of Honduras. After immigrating to the U.S., she began her career in education as a substitute teacher and later as a paraprofessional. In her current role, she's worked to assure the services provided by JP Schools adapts to chaning needs of children and families. Some of the support services she's led Include parenting classes that provide guidance on seperation, available services, college prep, and technology. 

Parent liaisons are bilingual and provide families with information about a variety of community resources available to them in their native language.
