Mrs. Mary Carter - Teacher of the Year

The administration, faculty, staff students, alumni and entire West Jefferson High School community are pleased to recognize Mrs. Mary H. Carter as the 2019-2010 West Jefferson High School Teacher of the Year.

Mary Hogan Carter was educated in the Louisiana public schools of Orleans Parish.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Xavier University of Louisiana in May 1973 and later continued her education receiving a Master of Science degree in Mathematics from Loyola University of New Orleans.  She has received Plus 30 graduate hours while pursuing certification in academically gifted education at various state universities.

Currently, Mary is employed as a teacher of gifted mathematics students at West Jefferson High School in Harvey, LA.  She has been a teacher at West Jefferson since October 23, 1985. Additionally, she is the school’s athletic director, Department chair, Key Club co-advisor, senior class co-sponsor, graduation coordinator, and coordinates ACT/LEAP 2025 testing.  She has been the athletic director for 25+ years and she holds the position of Treasurer and Awards Chair for the Louisiana High School Athletic Directors Association. Mrs. Carter is a “Buc” for life and excited that she has spent all 33 ½ years teaching in Jefferson Parish at the school she loves, West Jefferson High School.

Mary joined the distinguished Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated while on the campus of Xavier University (Beta Delta) in the spring of 1971.  She later transferred her membership to the Alpha Gamma Zeta chapter and has been very active holding various elected positions. Presently, she is the chapter President and has held that position since 2016. 

Mary is an active member of St. Joseph Missionary Baptist Church in Marrero, LA.   Her pastor is Rev. Dr. Melvin Collins Zeno. She serves as President of the Scholarship ministry, Vacation Bible School teacher, member of Church Anniversary ministry, Social Justice Ministry and attends Sunday school and Bible study regularly.  She believes that “all things are possible through Christ who strengthens her daily”.

Mrs. Carter is the devoted wife of Nathan B. Carter, Sr. of 47 years, proud mother of Nathan Jr. of Baton Rouge, LA., Dr. Terrolyn Carter and Brandon of Buford, GA; all honor graduates of West Jefferson High School.  She is the loving grandmother of 2 granddaughters and 3 grandsons.
