JP Schools Students and Schools Show Growth on 2022 LEAP Exams
In the midst of the global pandemic and Hurricane Ida recovery, Jefferson Parish Schools was one of 19 school systems that showed the most growth in Louisiana based on 2021-2022 LEAP scores released today by the Louisiana Department of Education. Jefferson Parish Schools students grew 3% in students scoring mastery or above on LEAP, increasing from 26% to 29%.
“I am proud of the progress our students are making. This achievement could not have been possible without the hard work of our students, teachers, administrators, and support staff and the support of our families, School Board, and community,” said JP Schools Superintendent Dr. James Gray. “In what has been arguably the most challenging time in American education, our educators found a way to continue moving children forward.”
In addition to the district’s overall mastery growth, the LEAP results show:
Five Jefferson Parish Schools schools were recognized as top 2022 LEAP performing schools in Louisiana, meaning a high percentage of students scored mastery or above. Metairie Academy was ranked #1, Haynes Academy tied for #2, Patrick Taylor Academy tied for #3, and Airline Park Academy and Gretna #2 Academy tied for #4.
Students in grades 3-8th grew in mastery across all grade levels and all content areas, including English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.
The district was one of the few districts in Louisiana whose students grew in mastery in Social Studies grades 3-8th.
The Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) 2025 is a statewide assessment program for students in grades 3 through high school to measure student knowledge and skills in key courses: English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science and Social Science.
The tests measure the knowledge and skills contained in the state's content standards for that particular grade. Student scores are reported on five levels: Unsatisfactory, Approaching Basic, Basic, Mastery, or Advanced. Mastery and above is considered proficient, or ready for the next grade level.
