Superintendent's Message: January 22, 2021
JP Schools Family,
As we close out the second nine week grading period, prepare report cards and analyze student progress, we have an opportunity to reflect on what has worked well and how we will meet the needs of students for the remainder of the school year. Student learning continues to be a priority for us all. Consequently, we must remain steadfast in providing quality instruction despite the challenges of the pandemic.
Supporting Families to Drive Student Success
For students to be successful, we must support our families in adapting to the increased use of technology in schools. As such, we continue to offer free in-person computer skills workshops for parents. The workshops cover how to use Chromebooks, smartphone integration, Google Classroom, Google Meet, creating a Gmail account and other apps to help students participating in virtual and traditional learning. Register now to attend. Workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish. Capacity is limited so please register early.
Honoring Students of the Year
In line with student success, I want to take this time to honor our Jefferson Parish Schools Students of the Year. Earlier this week, we were honored to share in this joyous occasion by celebrating these students and their many accomplishments. The honorees will now compete in the regional Student of the Year competition, and the winners will compete to become a 2021 Louisiana Student of the Year. The 2021 Jefferson Parish Students of the Year are Leeland Pratt Parten (Metairie Academy for Advanced Studies), Hisham Kahoot (Chateau Estates School) and Rachel Guan (Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies).
The students we educate today are tomorrow’s teachers, scientists and healthcare professionals who will be taking care of us in the future. When our students are successful and prepared for a career or college, everyone benefits. Years down the line when I look back at this period of our lives, I know I will feel confident in the educational opportunities we provided to the students of Jefferson Parish. Thank you for your support and commitment to our goal.
Dr. James Gray
