Update on Tropical Storms Marco and Laura: August 24, 2020

JP Schools Families,

We made a decision on Sunday to close Monday and Tuesday given the threat of approaching storms. After conversations with parish officials today, Tropical Storm Marco has weakened and there are still some uncertainties about the impact of Tropical Storm Laura. Even though we may not be directly impacted by Tropical Storm Laura, there is still the threat of inclement weather.

We were excited and ready to welcome students back to school this week. However, in order for families to plan and because we want to give principals, teachers, and support staff the opportunity to return to their school campuses before students return, we are pushing back the start day for 1-12th grade students to Monday, August 31.

On Monday, August 31, PK/K students should be available for an individual at-home learning orientation. More information will be forthcoming from schools about how this will be handled. PK/K students will report to school, either virtually or in-person, Tuesday, September 1 or Wednesday, September 2 depending on their staggered start date.

Even though we are pushing the reopening of schools back to August 31, schools will continue to organize technology and instructional materials in order to distribute these materials to families in advance of the first day for students. Families will hear directly from their schools about when they can pick up resources for their students.

We may make additional adjustments for our schools in Grand Isle and Lafitte given those areas are under a mandatory evacuation at this time. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and keep you informed.

We will continue to use district email and the Student Progress Center messaging system to communicate the latest information directly to our families and employees. Stay tuned to the district’s website (www.jpschools.org) and our social media pages (FacebookTwitter, and Instagram) for the latest information.

The safety of students and employees remains our top responsibility. Please stay safe.
