Riverdale Middle 8th grader Cassie Bird is the winner of the annual JP Schools Finance Department art contest. Bird's artwork will appear on the cover of the school system's annual financial report, which will be seen by leaders across the district, parish, and state. Bird also won $100 for herself and $100 for her school's art program.

"I always want to explore different things through my work," said Bird.

Bird is a member of the school's art club who said she would love to major in art once she gets to college. She doesn't have any concrete plans for the money yet, but said she is excited to use some of it on art supplies.

This is the fifth year of the Finance Department’s art contest, which is open to students from all schools and grade levels. Students were asked to submit a piece that portrays both Jefferson Parish and education.
