Eight More JP Schools Students Named National Merit Scholars
Eight Jefferson Parish Schools seniors have been named college-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. This brings the total to 10 JP Schools students named National Merit Scholars this year.
“Congratulations to these remarkable young leaders for their continued commitment to academic excellence,” said JP Schools Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley. ”They make our school system and our state proud.”
The college-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners are (probable career fields in parenthesis):
Haynes Academy
- Marium Asif: LSU Scholarship
- Alexander Benoit: University of Alabama Scholarship (Medicine)
- Angel Estrada Jimenez: LSU Scholarship (Computer Science)
Patrick F. Taylor Academy
- Alexander Fryer: Florida State University Scholarship (Computer Engineering)
- Emily Kraus: Tulane University Scholarship (Environmental Science)
Thomas Jefferson High
- Cydnee Evans: Texas A&M University Scholarship (Civil Engineering)
- Vivian Nguyen: Tulane University Scholarship (Medicine)
- Justin Xiao: University of Texas at Dallas Scholarship (Actuarial Science)
The eight JP Schools students are among the over 3,000 winners announced today by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The college-sponsored scholarships are financed by U.S. colleges and universities. Each sponsor college selects their winners among the National Merit Finalists who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of study.
Two JP Schools students were named National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners in May. Twenty students in JP Schools have been named Finalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. This is the third announcement of winners in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. By the conclusion of this year’s competition, about 7,600 academic champions will have won National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million.
