5th Grade ELA Teacher, Mentor Teacher

What is the best part about teaching?

“It’s when the students have those light bulb moments or finally understand something that they have been struggling with for so long. It makes them want to keep going.”

What is something you wish you would’ve known as a first-year teacher?

“That you can’t do it all and it’s gonna take a lot of work in the beginning. As you become more knowledgeable, then everything going to come to you faster.”

Why is your role at the school very important?

“I am part of the ILT Team which means I’m a mentor teacher to a bunch of other new teachers. I show them that all this work they are putting into their jobs does pay off when you see students learn and see their growth.”

What book would you recommend others to read?

“Honestly, the book that got me hooked into teaching ELA was teaching Percy Jackson in the 4th grade. The students love it because it shows a character the same age as them and teaches mythology, which is interesting once you read up on it.”

What motivates you to do your best at your job?

“It’s seeing the results when students achieve their academic goals. For example, my students in the back of the class were screaming with excitement once they realized what the main point of the story was.”
