Superintendent
Dr. James Gray
Dr. James Gray serves as the superintendent of Jefferson Parish Schools (JP Schools), the largest and most diverse public school system in Louisiana, educating approximately 47,000 students. Since assuming the role in 2020, Dr. Gray has guided JP Schools through unprecedented challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and Hurricane Ida recovery, while spearheading significant advancements in academic performance and operational efficiency.
A visionary leader, Dr. Gray positioned JP Schools as a national exemplar by being one of the first large districts to resume in-person learning post-COVID-19. His tenure has been marked by notable academic achievements, with JP Schools among only 20 districts in Louisiana to improve its District Performance Score in 2021, followed by its most substantial performance score increase in a decade the next year.
In 2024, JP Schools reached a historic milestone by earning a B district rating, the first since 2015, underscoring Dr. Gray’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence.
To address the national teacher shortage, Dr. Gray introduced the Embark Aspiring Educators program, a groundbreaking initiative to develop, support, and retain talented educators within the district. His collaborative efforts with universities across the country have expanded educational opportunities for both students and adults, enhancing college readiness and workforce development through enriched CTE programming and new business partnerships in Jefferson Parish.
Under Dr. Gray’s leadership, JP Schools has implemented the Infrastructure and Efficiency Plan, consolidating seven schools to optimize resources and improve student services. This plan includes significant infrastructure investments, with the construction of two state-of-the-art schools. Recognizing the value of educators, Dr. Gray has also secured a district-funded 5% base pay increase for employees.
With over 30 years of experience in education, Dr. Gray continues to drive Jefferson Parish Schools toward a future of excellence, equity, and strong community engagement, ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed.
