Summer Bridge Literacy Camp

Summer Bridge Literacy Camp is a free summer learning program offered by Jefferson Parish Schools, which is designed to provide students with additional opportunities for accelerated learning and growth during the summer months in a fun learning environment. Summer Bridge program focuses on literacy and supporting students identified by the TS Gold or Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessment in need of additional literacy support to achieve grade-level proficiency. Students will receive 30+ hours of literacy interventions consisting of explicit, targeted instruction based on the science of reading along with math instruction in a camp-like setting.

Program Details:

Four weeks from June 1st - June 26th (No Classes on June 19th)
Half Day from 7:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.
Breakfast served at 7:30 a.m.
Instruction will commence at 8:00 a.m

3rd-grade below and well below
2nd-grade well below

Instructional Model:

In-Person only

Subjects:

Students will receive accelerated ELA instruction daily.

Sites/Transportation:

Students will be assigned to 1 of 4 hub sites across the district based upon their homeschool’s geographical location.
Students with bus transportation needs will be picked up from and dropped off at designated bus stops within the students’ homeschool’s attendance zone.
The Transportation Dept. will notify parents of drop off and pickup times

Dress Code:

Students are required to wear their current school uniform daily

FAQ's

What does it mean if my child received the following message on their report card? (Due to Bulletin 1566, your student will be retained and must attend Summer Literacy Camp.)

If your child was in the 3rd or 4th grade and reading below grade level, as indicated on the DIBELS end of year screener, they received the notification above on their report card. This means that your child must receive 30 hours of targeted literacy interventions in order to ensure your child has the greatest opportunity to read on level for the 26-27 school year. The following timeline outlines the support that will be provided before the 26-27 school year begins in August.

June 1st -June 26th Summer Bridge Literacy Camp (free for JP students) Steve Carter Tutoring (additional fees will apply)
July/August A school level ABIT(Academic Behavior Intervention Team) meeting led by school leaders to determine promotion based on participation in summer interventions, Steve Carter tutoring, and various school performance data.

I have vacation previously scheduled. How many days of Summerbridge can I actually miss? How can they make up the difference?

If you are enrolled in Summer Bridge and have to miss more than 2 days, parents can enroll their child in Steve Carter Tutoring to support literacy interventions consisting of explicit, targeted literacy instruction based on the science of reading. Bulletin 1566 requires that third and fourth grade students who score below grade-level on an end-of-year literacy assessment must receive 30 hours of summer literacy interventions.
