Why teach at a Star Academy campus?

Small Class Size: JP Star Academies operate with a maximum of 80 students per campus. Core teachers will enjoy smaller class sizes (20:1) and a lower overall student caseload to provide for more time/attention for individualized instruction and student support.

Student Impact: Overage students are at greater risk of dropping out of school. Star Academy teachers will change the trajectory of these students by providing an accelerated and engaging learning environment that develops the academic and SEL skills for high school success.

Team Collaboration and Support: Teachers work with their Star Academy team to implement the
curriculum and collaborate on strategies to meet the individual needs of students. Teachers receive
ongoing support from the campus-based administrative team as well as district-level coordinators and program specialists from NOLA Education (Star Academy technical assistance partner).

Innovative Curriculum: Teachers use Tier I (ELA and Math) district-provided materials to teach
students 7th and 8th grade standards using an accelerated model, blending skills needed for each
grade level. Science will accelerate/blend 7th and 8th grade standards via a hands-on learning
experience curriculum provided by NOLA Education. Social Studies will use the TCI online platform to teach the new Social Studies Louisiana State Standards at an accelerated pace.

What teacher attributes are important for success?

A Star Academy Teacher uses TAP best practices to guide and support students as they develop skills and knowledge in a collaborative, project-based learning environment. The ideal candidate is an experienced Louisiana educator who is excited to learn and implement a new educational paradigm. Duties and Responsibilities are consistent with all JP teacher positions, but essential activities for Star Academy teachers include:

  • Work alongside students to navigate the Star Academy instructional materials and take ownership of their education.
  • Guide students in creating their own solutions.
  • Display excellent classroom management capabilities
  • Provide individual academic support and facilitate small group activities.
  • Administer regular performance assessments and track student progress.
  • Maintain a classroom environment with multiple learning activities coinciding.
