Welcome students and parents, to a new and exciting school year! I do hope that all of you have had a restful, but productive summer. Listed below are a few important upcoming events we have scheduled for certain grade levels. There will be separate e-mails sent to senior parents only from time to time for special announcements. Please note that I do have a wealth of information on my website, tjhscounseling.com. On my website there are checklists for grades 9th – 12th, scholarship information and scholarship websites, and much more (please be patient as I am still updating information for the new school year as I get information in).
Friday, August 2, 2019:
Freshmen Orientation (students only) from 12PM – 5PM
Parents Attend from 5PM- 6:30PM
Juniors and Seniors:
Thursday, September 19, 2019 from 6PM-7:30PM
Our LOSFA/Financial Aid Night will be held here at Thomas Jefferson High School in the library (please note: if the location changes, I will notify senior parents through the senior parent e-mail listing).
This presentation is for parents (but students are welcome to attend). A representative from the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Aid (LOSFA) will be here to present important information to you regarding the financial aid process, TOPS, and other pertinent information to help prepare for college. The representative will also be available for any questions you may have. Please come out and receive this valuable information! Refreshments will be served!
Other important dates For Juniors and Seniors:
ASVAB Test Date: Thursday, September 26, 2019 in the auditorium@7:30 AM
The ASVAB test will be administered to those juniors and seniors who sign up for the test with me in the Counselor’s office. A pre-ASVAB presentation will be given to the junior class a few days before the exam is administered (the date of this presentation has not been confirmed yet but I will inform the juniors once it is set). During the presentation, a representative from ASVAB, and a representative from the Army National Guard will do a brief summary of what the ASVAB military entrance exam is used for, and how it helps students identify their career interests. They will also explain how joining the National Guard can help pay for college. Taking the ASVAB test does not mean you have to join the military; it is just another means of expanding your options, if interested.
Juniors and Seniors:
Friday, September 26, 2019: College Fair held at Haynes Academy
6PM – 7:30PM (More Information on this will be given out soon)
Dual Enrollment: For students who are interested in applying to Delgado for dual enrollment, please know that you cannot register yourselves (as mentioned in our junior meeting last year). For Delgado, you must come in and fill out the paper application with me first, then, I have to send it over to the dual enrollment coordinator along with your transcript and ACT score. Then, you must apply on-line as well under the dual enrollment section. You must have the course six-digit code, course name, days and times written on the paper application before I forward it to Delgado. The dual enrollment coordinator at Delgado must manually enter you into your class in order for you to receive the dual enrollment fee. Remember, you must have at least a composite score of 19 on the ACT (with at least a “19” in Math and “18” in English to be eligible for dual enrollment).
The other dual enrollment colleges we partner with are:
The University of Holy Cross, Xavier University, The University of New Orleans, and Dillard University. You must contact me if you plan on enrolling at any of these institutions because I have to notify their departments of our approval for you to participate, and I have to send in academic documents for you as well.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Please give me a little time to return your call or e-mails, being that it is the beginning of the school year and it is a little hectic as we prepare to welcome our wonderful students. I wish all of you a safe and successful school year! …And a special Welcome to the Senior Class of 2020! I look forward to helping you with your future plans during and beyond high school.
Attention Seniors and Senior parents: During the first two weeks of school, I will be giving you a brag sheet to fill out along with some important information for your parents to read. I will also need a resume from you as soon as possible. This will be necessary for me to complete college and scholarship recommendations for you. Parents, please remind your students to return these documents to me in a timely fashion.
UPCOMING Fall ACT Test Dates:
September 14, 2019: Must register by August 16th before having to pay late fees!
