Jefferson Parish citizens approved a millage renewal in November 2021. How does that tax compare with this one?
Both the tax voted on in November and the one on the April 30 ballot are renewals, meaning their renewal does not cause any additional costs. The November renewal was for a property tax millage and this renewal is for a half-cent sales tax. Another difference is what they support. The November renewal generates just over $34 million for teacher salaries and benefits. The April sales tax renewal has a wider range of uses and accounts for just over 10% of our total budget. This half-cent renewal turns into $57 million to help our schools pay for things like school counselors and social workers, safe school buildings, teacher and staff salaries and benefits, and high-quality learning materials.
-
Why can’t the school system simply tighten the budget to account for these funds?
The April sales tax renewal accounts for just over 10% of our total budget. Removing 10% of our total budget would involve drastic cuts that would dramatically reduce the services we provide for students, families, and the community. This could include a significant reduction in force, numerous school closures and consolidations, and the loss of vital services, activities, and programs.
