Gifted Education Program

The gifted education program provides educational services to students who have been identified through a state evaluation as being academically gifted and who demonstrate the potential for exceptional academic achievement in grades pre-kindergarten to 12. The goal of the gifted program is to challenge, support, and inspire gifted students through differentiated, accelerated, compacted and enrichment learning opportunities designed to meet their unique academic, social and emotional needs. Parents are encouraged to contact the principal, assistant principal and/or designee [e.g. Special Education or Academic Behavior Intervention Team (A/BIT) Chairpersons] at their child’s school to request a potentially gifted screening.

The Child Search Department identifies toddlers between the ages of two (2) and five (5) who are eligible to participate in the pre-kindergarten gifted education program. Please contact the receptionist at 504-349-8677 to schedule an appointment for a potentially gifted screening.

The Pupil Appraisal Department identifies students who are eligible for the gifted program. A student must be referred, screened and evaluated before entering the program. Once a student has been identified through a formal evaluation, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is developed and instructional services are implemented.

The Gifted and Talented Education Department also offers talented in music, theater or visual art instructional services.  The talent education program provides educational services to students who have been identified through a state evaluation as being talented in the areas of music, theater and visual art.

Through our gifted programs, gifted students will develop:

  • Advanced research skills and methods. Skills include organizing, asking higher order questions, planning, analyzing, data reporting and citing references properly.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving skills with a variety of complex topics within the area of study. Skills include flexibility, fluency, originality and elaboration in thought, divergent and convergent thinking, brainstorming, and risk taking.
  • Critical thinking and logical problem solving skills in the pertinent academic area. Skills include predicting, inferring, questioning, defending decisions, evaluating and adjusting decisions, and developing intellectual empathy.
  • Advanced communication skills. Skills include presentation skills, debate, speeches, and the integration of multi-media and technology.
  • An understanding of self and how their unique characteristics may influence interactions with others. Skills include group discussion skills, group dynamics, questioning skills, identifying varying perspectives, and selecting means of communication.
  • Further advanced technology skills as a resource in communication tools across the curriculum. Skills include researching, evaluating validity and reliability of internet resources, analyzing and collecting data, and using different tools to master technology.
