Driver’s Education

Driving instruction with JP Schools is offered to high school students ages 15 to 17 and at least in the 8th grade. This is a state-approved course. Students can receive a 1/2-unit credit for taking the course, and it is offered 4 times yearly.

The 38-hour driver’s education course includes 30 hours of classroom instruction. Students must attend all 30 hours of the in-person classes. The course also consists of 8 hours of student driving. Enrollment is limited for each session.

All current Jefferson Parish Schools employees will receive a 10% discount for their son/daughter to attend the Driver’s Ed.

The next JP Schools Driver's Education session will be the 

Winter Session:

Classes: December 7-18 and 21, 2026 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. 

Registration:  November 9-15, 2026 online beginning at 8:00 AM.

               

***Effective September 14, 2026, Jefferson Parish Schools will implement a late pickup policy for Driver's Education students. If a student is picked up more than 10 minutes after class dismissal, a late fee of $1 per minute will apply, and the person completing the pickup must sign the late log. Please be aware that all late fees must be settled at 501 Manhattan Blvd., Suite 2200, Harvey, before the student's Certificate of Completion can be issued.***

 

 

 

To register:                           

1. Parents must review the attached presentation.

2.  The parent or guardian must complete the online Registration Form. (Available November 9, 2026 8:00 AM)

3.  The student's Birth Certificate and/ Custody Paperwork (if applicable) must be uploaded.

4.  Parent / Legal Guardian's Driver's License or State Issued Identification Card must be uploaded.

5.  The Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP Card) from the DMV is required for registration.  Parents can make an appointment with the   DMV by going to www.expresslane.org and selecting "Book Appointment" to obtain a Permit.   The Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP) card in Louisiana is a document that allows a person to drive with a licensed driver's education instructor while attending a driver's education course.   The TIP card does not permit the applicant to drive with a licensed driver.

6.  Once the Office of Community Programs has received the completed Registration Form and a copy of the Temporary Instructional       Permit,  an email will be sent to the email address entered on the registration form with the payment link to complete the payment         online. 

7.  In-person Driver's Education classroom sessions run for eleven (11) nights. Classes meet from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM (or 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM during the summer session).  Per State of Louisiana guidelines, students must complete all 30 hours of classroom instruction. Because Jefferson Parish Schools does not offer make-up sessions, perfect attendance is strictly required. Arriving late, leaving early, or missing any portion of a class will disqualify you from the session. Students who miss any class time must retake the entire 30-hour classroom portion during a future session at their own expense.

The Registration Link will be posted on the Jefferson Parish Schools website beginning at 8:00 AM on the dates listed below:

26-27 Driver's Education Registration Schedule: 

• Winter Session:  November 9-15, 2026, or until all seats are sold
• Spring Session:  January 11-17, 2027, or until all seats are sold
• Summer Session:  May 3-9, 2027, or until all seats are sold

Classes:   

Westbank classes are held at John Ehret High School, 4300 Patriot Street, Marrero  
Eastbank classes are held at East Jefferson High School, 400 Phlox Street, Metairie 

26-27 Driver's Education Classroom Schedule:   PLEASE NOTE DATE CORRECTIONS

• Winter Session:  December 7 - 18 and 21, 2026 5;00 PM until 8:00 PM
• Spring Session:  February 22 - March 5 and 9, 2027 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM
• Summer Session:  June 7-17, 2027  1:00 PM until 4:30 PM (additional time may be required on the 17th to complete OMV Testing.)

Fees:  

38 Hour Course:   $470.00

8 hour Behind-the-Wheel Training Only:  $295.00

Additional Behind-the-Wheel Training:  $37.00 per hour

Additional copies of Certificates: $15.00
