Quarantine & Isolation Protocols Update: January 2, 2022

  • The Louisiana Department of Health announced enhanced public health recommendations based on the current surge in positive COVID-19 cases. The Louisiana Department of Education updated their guidance based on these recommendations, which you can view online. Jefferson Parish Schools has remained in contact with medical professionals throughout this latest surge.

Based on these recommendations, we are making the following changes to our isolation and quarantine protocols, effective January 3, 2022:

If You Test Positive for COVID-19

    Everyone, regardless of vaccination status:

    1. Stay home for five days. If you have no symptoms or your symptoms are resolved after five days, you can leave your house and return to school/work.
    2. If you have a fever, continue to stay home until your fever resolves.
    3. Continue to wear a mask around others for five additional days. If school cannot ensure masking for five additional days, then the case should quarantine for a full 10 days.

If You Were a Close Contact/Exposed to Someone with COVID-19

Students who have completed the primary series of an mRNA vaccine:

    1. Wear a mask around others for 10 days.
    2. Test on day five.

Staff who have completed the primary series of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine within the last 6 months, OR have completed the primary series of J&J vaccine within the last 2 months, OR have been boosted:

    1. Wear a mask around others for 10 days.
    2. Test on day five.

    Students who are unvaccinated:

    1. Stay home for five days. After that continue to wear a mask around others for five additional days. If school cannot ensure masking for five additional days, then contact should quarantine for a full 10 days.
    2. Test on day five.

Staff who are unvaccinated, OR have completed the primary series of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine over 6 months ago and are not boosted, OR completed the primary series of J&J over 2 months ago and are not boosted:

    1. Stay home for five days. After that continue to wear a mask around others for five additional days. If school cannot ensure masking for five additional days, then contact should quarantine for a full 10 days.
    2. Test on day five.

We will continue to follow our remaining Start Strong Jefferson protocols when employees return January 3 and students return January 4. This includes encouraging vaccines and strongly recommending face masks while inside the school facility or in close proximity to others while outdoors.

This latest surge is a reminder that we must remain vigilant in our efforts to push back the virus and maintain safe, in-person learning. Vaccines remain the best public health measure to protect people from COVID-19, slow transmission, and reduce the likelihood of new variants emerging. As we have done since the beginning of the pandemic, we will continue to analyze the latest data and consult with local and state officials to provide safe, in-person instruction.
