Washington Elementary Policies & Procedures

  • ATTENDANCE INFORMATION
According to state guidelines and our school system calendar, an elementary or middle school student is not allowed more than eleven (11) unexcused absences during the school year in order to receive grades and be considered for promotion to the next grade.
Our school system recognizes the reasons listed below that would result in an absence being classified as an excused absence. Excused absences do not count toward the total number of absences a student is allowed during a school year.
    Reasons for Excused Absences:
A physical or emotional illness as verified by a doctor’s note within five (5) days of the absence(s)
An extended hospital stay as verified by a doctor’s note
An extended recuperation from an accident as verified by a doctor’s note
An extended contagious disease with a family as verified by a doctor’s note
A prior school system’s approval for educational purposes
A death in the immediate family (not to exceed five school days)
A religious observance of special and recognized holidays of the child’s faith
    A natural catastrophe or disaster
For any other extenuating circumstance(s), parents/legal guardians must make a formal appeal to the Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance at the appropriate region
    Arrival and Departure Procedures.

    Arrival Procedures
Morning duty begins for teachers at 6:50 a.m. Therefore, no child is allowed on campus before 6:50 a.m. Parents of walkers and car riders should drop their students off at the gate on Webster Street. Parents entering the campus at any time must check in at the office. If you have some business to conduct on campus, when you drop you child off, you must come to the office and sign in first. Your children will be well supervised after 6:50 .m. It is not necessary or acceptable for parents to stand outside by the students’ waiting areas or in the cafeteria prior to the beginning of the school day.
Prek students must be supervised at the Bus Stop in the morning by an adult 18 years or older. Failure to comply may result in the prek student not riding the bus to school.

    Departure Procedures
Walkers and car riders are dismissed from the gate on Webster St. Any student not picked up by 2:40.m. will be considered a “late pick up”. Late pick ups will have to be signed out from the office.
If a child is a bus student and the parent wants to pick up their child on a particular day, the parent must notify the school. This can be done by sending a written note to the child’s teacher or calling the school secretary and letting her know. The child will not be held off the bus unless the parent has notified the school.
Parents of prek students: You or someone at least 18 years of age must meet your prek child at the bus in the afternoon. Siblings of prek students who attend Washington will not be allowed to walk their prek brother/sister home from the bus. Failure to comply with this procedure will result in your prek child being returned to school where you will have to pick them up.
Your cooperation with these procedures will be greatly appreciated.
